After a year of initial chaos, disappointment, and really poor advice when rupturing my ACL, I was fortunate to be referred to Paul, who has simply changed my life. I met Paul, unable to walk properly, with absolutely no confidence in my knee and zero ability to perform any sort of exercise, but 18 months down the line, I am back running, playing football, golfing, the lot! From the initial meeting with Paul to the day of surgery to the present, now I have felt nothing but faith and confidence in the journey; despite setbacks, I have always felt assured. After many years of sporting activities including football, tennis, golf and karate, in early 2013 aged 52 I developed an intolerable pain around my right upper thigh area which coupled with ongoing and long term lower back problems lead me to a physiotherapist who having watched me walk suggested that my problems were a symptom of the same cause being noticeable leg length difference, causing bow leg walking action resulting in the regular back pain and now a damaged and probable arthritic right hip. He had no hesitation in referring me to Paul Jairaj, in whom he had the greatest faith that he could end my suffering. I made an appointment and was immediately put at ease with Paul’s confidence and reassuring manner that a custom-made hip replacement would likely correct the leg length and end the agony, subject to MRI scans confirming the damage he suspected, which, of course, it did. The operation was a resounding success, to the extent that after leaving London Bridge hospital three days after, I required nothing stronger than paracetamol. Mr Jairaj indicated to me with unerring accuracy when he might be seeing me again to correct the years of joint damage I had encountered. Consequently, I can report having my left hip replaced in 2013, followed by my right knee in 2019 and my left knee in 2020, all with minimum fuss and great care, to the extent that I attend the gym most days except for when I am playing golf and pursuing all activities pain-free. As a former (amateur) football player and marathon runner I have been suffering from osteoarthritis in both knees since my fifties. The condition has now deteriorated to such an extent that a bilateral knee joint replacement will be called for in the not-too-distant future.

But I feel very fortunate to have had Mr Jairaj as my Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon for the last couple of years. From my very first consultation with him, Mr Jairaj impressed me by his high intelligence, his extensive knowledge and expertise in his chosen specialty and his exemplary approach to patient care. Mr Jairaj’s whole approach is utterly professional. He is able to explain medical issues, and e.g. outline the different options for treatment, with great clarity and incisiveness, and in a way that the patient can readily understand.

At the same time, Mr Jairaj displays great empathy for his patient and is sensitive to the patient’s needs and concerns. I am, for example, grateful to Mr Jairaj for having over the last 18 months given me two successive bilateral steroid knee injections. This has enabled me throughout this period to enjoy a pretty active lifestyle and to operate with a very reasonable degree of mobility, although I appreciate that in the longer term a bilateral knee joint replacement is unavoidable.

As and when the time comes for this, I have every confidence that Mr Jairaj will perform the operation with the utmost skill and care.
